Do you experience pain in the front of your knee 🦵 Do you struggle to kneel into your knees because if pain at the front of your knees 😳

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a broad term used to describe pain in the front of the knee and around the patella, or kneecap. It is sometimes called “runner’s knee” 🏃🏼‍♀️because it is common in people who participate in sports particularly females and young adults. But patellofemoral pain syndrome 😣can occur in non athletes, as well. The pain it causes can make it difficult to climb stairs, kneel down, and perform other everyday activities.

🤗Luckily there’s a solution for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome and effective management begins with a full physiotherapy assessment to identify the problem🧐 and outline the best course of treatment to overcome the knee pain and get back to full training and activities as soon as possible.

Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists 🤓use a 3 Stage Knee Rehab Program to manage and treat Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome.

The initial stage of treatment (as with most overuse injuries) is to actively control pain and inflammation – this is best achieved with a combination of ice, rest from aggravating activities, manual therapy and taping.

The next stage is the rehabilitation phase where the focus is on exercises to strengthen the knee🦵 to restore pre injury function. The majority of exercises should be performed pain free with close attention being paid to any post exercise pain and especially increased pain the morning after a rehabilitation session – the need for appropriate strengthening must be balanced with possible aggravation of symptoms.

The final stage of a rehabilitation is focus on performance and returning to sports to help you hit your personal goals! This can include a running analysis🏃🏼‍♀️ and preventative strategies to ensure you do not experience recurrent knee pain! 🤗
