😳Is your child always complaining about back pain Concerned that your child might have Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurts, usually when kids 🧒are between 10 and 15 years old. About the same number of boys 👦and girls 👱‍♀️are diagnosed with scoliosis. But curves in girls are 10 times more likely to get worse and may need to be treated. 😳😳Scoliosis can run in families, but most children with scoliosis don’t have a family history of the disease.

One of the common complications of scoliosis is low back pain. Adults who had scoliosis as children are more likely to have chronic back pain than are people in the general population. In scoliosis, the spine curves to the right or the left and causes the shoulders to look uneven, with one shoulder blade sticking out more than the other, the waist looks uneven, because one hip is higher than the other. Over time, if left untreated, scoliosis can worsen progressive causing the spine to rotate and twist so that the rib cage sticks out more on one side and in severe cases affect the heart and lung making it harder to breathe and for the heart to pump. 😲

It is very important to ensure that children are monitored as they grow that their spine is not starting to curve to one side. One of the signs of scoliosis developing is back pain. When detected early, scoliosis can be effectively treated and managed to prevent future complications of the spine becoming more curved and minimising the need for surgery. 💪

Here at My Favourite Physio, when our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists see a child with back pain, we always screen their spines for scoliosis. If we detect that a child has scoliosis, 🧐we not only treat and manage their back pain, we refer them to Scoliosis Clinic for ongoing monitoring as they grow so that early bracing can be implemented if needed, to prevent the need for future spinal surgery.
