😳Been told that your child has weak ankles that need support with rigid taping 🥺Does your child’s Physiotherapist or Sports Coach strap their ankle using rigid sports tape before games

Rigid sports tape, also known as athletic tape, is typically made of a combination of brown cotton fabric and adhesive material. The fabric component provides strength, stability, and support, while the adhesive helps to secure the tape in place. The fabric used in sports tape is usually a woven or non-woven cotton material that is durable and has a degree of elasticity.
The adhesive used in rigid sports tape is usually a zinc oxide-based adhesive. Zinc oxide adhesive provides a strong grip and helps the tape adhere to the skin or underlying layers effectively. It is designed to be long-lasting and withstand rigorous physical activities, providing stability and support to joints and muscles.

😲Skin reactions from rigid sports tape can occur in some individuals, studies have reported incidence rates of skin reactions to rigid sports tape ranging from 1% to 5%. These reactions can include skin irritation, redness, itching, rash, or blisters. 👧Children’s skin can generally be more sensitive and delicate compared to adult skin, which means they may have an increased risk of experiencing skin reactions to sports tape. The thinner and more fragile nature of children’s skin makes it more susceptible to irritation or allergic reactions.

Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓never apply sports tape directly onto a child’s skin due to the risk of allergic skin reactions. We will use a Pre-wrap, which is a thin fabric material that is applied directly to the skin before applying the sports tape. It acts as a protective barrier, preventing direct contact between the skin and the adhesive of the sports tape.
