😬 Have you noticed that your 19 month old toddler is stiff in their legs and struggling to stand by themselves? 🥺Been watching and waiting for your toddler to walk by themselves, but they are now over 18 months old and not looking like they can stand balance by themselves yet?

Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓often meet parents who are concerned about their toddlers who are not yet walking and they are older than 18 months old. Recently, our team met Ms F, who is 19 months old 👧and not yet walking by herself. Her mother expressed concerns that Ms F seems very stiff in her legs and she is dragging one leg more than the other when she tries to walk.

On assessment, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists were able to determine that Ms F has Cerebral Palsy affecting both arms and legs, with her right arm and leg more affected than her left. As a result of the increased muscle tone in her legs, she struggling to place her feet down and keep her balance. We commenced Early Intervention Physiotherapy immediately, starting with Radial Shockwave therapy to reduce the muscle tone in her legs so that she can learn to place her feet down flat on the ground. And then she was harnessed onto our Treadmill Walking System to learn to walk while her body weight was supported.🚶‍♀️

Within 3 sessions of Physiotherapy, Ms F started to take steps to walk all by herself!! 🥳 Her mother was thrilled at the rapid progress she made with Physiotherapy and wished she had come to Paediatric Physiotherapy sooner! Ms F will need to continue Early Intervention Paediatric Physiotherapy to improve her core strength, leg strength, maintain her calf muscle length, improve her balance and coordination to help her achieve age appropriate gross motor skills as she grows. However, her future is looking bright and we are excited to see her hit her milestones!
