Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. It is estimated that approximately 1 in every 1100 babies born in Australia will have Down syndrome. 👶🏻This means that approximately 290 new babies with Down syndrome are born each year.

👎Myth #1:
Babies with Down Syndrome will not walk until they are 4-5 years old.
👍Truth #1:
Babies with Down Syndrome have low muscle tone and will require Early Intervention Paediatric Physiotherapy to help them learn to roll, sit, crawl and walk. At My Favourite Physio, the babies we see at 3-5 months old achieve independent walking without aids by 18 months old, like typically developing children.

👎Myth #2:
Babies with Down Syndrome will have multiple medical complications, like heart conditions, cleft palates, feeding difficulties.
👍Truth #2:
Babies with Down Syndrome may have multiple medical complications but not ALL babies with Down Syndrome will have all the possible medical complications. About 50% of babies with Down Syndrome have heart conditions, which can be treated successfully with surgery. Many of the babies we see in our clinic, do not have any heart conditions, feeding issues or cleft palates.

👎Myth #3:
Babies with Down Syndrome will have intellectual difficulties and will need to attend Special School.
👍Truth #3:
Statistic indicate that 46% of children with Down Syndrome attend mainstream school and 8% attend mixed mainstream/special school.
