🥴 Is your child complaining of knee pain and stiffness in the mornings and after prolonged sitting or resting? 🤔Did you know that child can have arthritis too?

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), is a group of chronic autoimmune inflammatory diseases that affect children 👧 and adolescents under the age of 16. It is the most common type of arthritis in children. Like other forms of arthritis, JIA involves inflammation of the joints, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility. However, unlike adult-onset arthritis, the cause of JIA is not well understood. It is believed to result from a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors.

There are several different types of juvenile arthritis, and each has its specific characteristics and symptoms.
🦵Oligoarticular JIA: This type affects fewer than five joints and often involves the knee and wrist. It is the most common form of JIA.
🦵Polyarticular JIA: This type affects five or more joints and can be divided into rheumatoid factor-positive or rheumatoid factor-negative subtypes.
🤒Systemic JIA: This type involves inflammation of multiple joints and can also affect other organs in the body, such as the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. It may cause fever and rash, and fatigue.
🦵Enthesitis-related arthritis (ERA): This type involves inflammation at the entheses, where tendons and ligaments attach to the bones. It often affects the spine, hips, and entheses of the legs.
Psoriatic JIA: This type is associated with psoriasis, a skin condition that causes red, scaly patches.

😬If you suspect that your child may have JIA, it is crucial to see a Paediatric Rheumatologist 👩‍⚕️promptly, as early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent joint damage. The treatment for juvenile arthritis typically includes a combination of medication, physiotherapy, and lifestyle modifications.
