🤔Wondering if your child has a speech and language delay or do they have Autism?

🗣️Speech and language delay and autism are two distinct but sometimes related developmental conditions that affect communication and social interaction in children.

Speech and language delay refer to when a child’s development of speech and language skills is slower than expected for their age, but the underlying cause is not necessarily related to autism. A child with a speech delay might have trouble articulating words or using age-appropriate speech sounds. Language Delay involves difficulties in understanding and using language. While children with language delay might have trouble following instructions, using correct grammar, and building sentences. They may also struggle with vocabulary development and expressing themselves effectively. Children with speech and language delay may catch up to their peers with appropriate intervention and support.😊

Autism is a complex developmental disorder that primarily affects social interaction, communication, and behaviour. It is characterised by a range of symptoms that can vary in severity. Children with autism may struggle to understand and respond to social cues, have difficulty forming relationships, and exhibit limited interest in others. Language difficulties in children with autism can range from delayed speech and language to more severe challenges, such as nonverbal communication, echolalia (repeating words or phrases), and difficulty initiating or maintaining conversations. 😬Children with autism often engage in repetitive behaviours or interests, which can include repetitive movements, routines, or fixations on specific topics. Many children with autism have heightened sensitivities to sensory stimuli, such as lights, sounds, textures, and tastes.
