Finding that your bag👜is cutting into your shoulder each day and causing you neck 😣pain Experiencing neck 😳pain at the end of the day when you have to lug a heavy backpack 🎒 for the day Perhaps you are wondering 🤔why you keep getting neck and shoulder 😣pain on one side

If that sounds like you, then you probably need to reconsider what kind of bag you are carrying, how you are carrying it 🧐and how you are addressing the existing neck 😣pain that you are currently experiencing.
Here at My Favourite Physio, we offer School Backpack Assessments for school age children as part of any assessment of neck or back pain. Often we find ourselves carrying out a similar Bag Assessment on many young adults at University as they are also carrying bags that contribute to their neck pain.

Here’s 3 Top Tips that you can try at home yourself:
1. For those who prefer to carry a shoulder bag instead of a backpack, limit the size of your shoulder bag to avoid carrying too many things in it that would weight down the bag on your shoulder. Pick a shoulder bag with wider straps so that the weight of the bag is distributed more evenly over the shoulder.

2. When choosing a backpack 🎒, pick one with a separate laptop compartment that allows you to place your laptop at the back of your backpack. When packing your bag, place heavier items closer to the back of the backpack, where it is nearest to your spine so that it exerts the least strain on your lower back. Wear both straps on your backpack to ensure that the weight of your backpack is distributed evenly.

3. Carry out regular neck stretches to prevent built up of muscle 💪tightness in your neck and shoulders. Check your posture to make sure that you are not slouching when you are standing as that will place more stress on the front of your shoulders and make the neck and shoulder muscles work harder just to keep you upright. 🚶‍♂️
