🥴Have you been told to do neck stretches for your baby with Torticollis to correct their head tilt 😬Have you been doing the neck stretches for your baby “all the time” and you don’t see any improvement

Congenital Muscular Torticollis is a condition whereby baby👶🏻 is born with a tight neck muscle which causes baby to turn their head to one side and tilts their head to one side at the same time. The incidence of Torticollis in newborns can vary, but it is estimated to occur in approximately 1-4% of infants. It is commonly seen in firstborn babies and can be associated with factors such as intrauterine positioning, large babies and multiple pregnancies of twins and triplets.

Early detection and Paediatric Physiotherapy Intervention are the key to successful management of Torticollis. Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists🤓 see many newborn babies for the management of Torticollis and Plagiocephaly ( mis-shapened head shape as a result of Torticollis).

One of the common mistakes we see parents make is not carrying out neck stretches to the frequency that is needed each day for the tight neck muscles to stretch and lengthen, so that baby is able to correct their head tilt and turn their head easily from side to side. Parents often say that they are stretching baby’s neck muscles all the time, but if they are only holding a stretch for 30 seconds 2-3 times a day, the amount of stretching time over a 24 hour period is only 1 minute to 1.5 minutes a day. 😮This is insufficient stretching time to correct baby’s head tilt. We recommend that parents carry out neck stretches for 4 minutes in each direction while singing “twinkle, Twinkle, Little Stars”, and to repeat at every nappy change, which often is 8-10 times a day.
