Have you noticed that your newborn baby’s feet 🦶 are turned in Been told to just do some stretches for baby’s foot to help it straighten out, but you haven’t noticed any improvements 😬

Newborn babies can have turned in feet 👣because of their position in the womb known as Positional Talipes or because of their bone structure during their development in the womb known as Structural Talipes. It is important to be able to differentiate between the two types of causes because the treatment for each of them is very different.🤔

Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓see many babies 👶🏻and children where their parents have concerns about their foot positioning. Early intervention is always the key 🔑to great outcomes. Positional Talipes can be corrected effectively with stretches and positioning, while Structural Talipes may require a treatment program called the Ponseti Method which lasts over 4 years. 😲

Here is a Checklist for Baby’s feet to help you determine if baby has Positional Talipes or Structural Talipes:
1. 👣Does baby’s foot will straighten out easily when you stroke the borders of their feet or the sole of their feet?
2. 👣Does baby’s foot look straighter each passing day since their birth?
3. 👣Does baby’s foot look free of deep creases in the back of their heel and on the sole of their foot?

If you answered YES to the above questions, then it’s likely that baby has Positional Talipes and will benefit from specific stretches and positioning to help improve their foot posture. 👣
If you answered NO to the above questions, then it’s likely that baby has Structural Talipes and will benefit from seeing an Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist 🤓or Paediatrician 👩‍⚕️for a full assessment of their foot bones.
