🥴Been told that your child with Cerebral Palsy needs Botox Injections to reduce the spasticity in their legs or arms? 🤔Been researching about the effects of Botox Injections and you don’t like the side effects for your child?

💉Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) injections are commonly used as a treatment for individuals with cerebral palsy, particularly for managing spasticity. Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders that affect movement and coordination, often resulting in muscle stiffness or spasticity. Botox injections can be helpful in alleviating some of the symptoms associated with spasticity in cerebral palsy.

The goal of reducing spasticity in cerebral palsy is to relax the muscles, allow functional range of movement in the joints and facilitate Paediatric Physiotherapy intervention for improved functional movement. 🦵The problem with using Botox to reduce spasticity in cerebral palsy is that recent studies have shown that Botox is actually a denervating agent and causes permanent damage to the nerve receptors and causing irreversible damage to the muscles in cerebral palsy. 😱

A safer alternative to Botox is Radial shockwave therapy. Also known as radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (rESWT), it is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing and reduce pain in various musculoskeletal conditions. Studies have shown that Radial Shockwave Therapy also effectively reduces spasticity in cerebral palsy muscles to allow functional range of movement in the joints and facilitate Paediatric Physiotherapy intervention for improved functional movement. The key difference is the effects of rESWT is temporary and there is no permanent, irreversible nerve damage form using rESWT. 🤗

Here at My Favourite Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓have been using Radial Shockwave Therapy effectively to help children with cerebral palsy learn to move better.
