😳 Have you been told that your child has Global Developmental Delay? 🤔 Wondering if your child should get a Brain MRI to find out if there’s anything wrong in their brain?

🥴 One of the most challenging aspects of having been told that your child has Global Developmental Delay is trying to find out why and what caused your child to be delayed. It is natural to want to have answers and it is normal that the uncertainty of not knowing is frustrating and upsetting for most parents. This is the reason why many parents would ask for further investigations like a Brain MRI to determine the cause of their child’s delay.

However, there are a few important considerations that parents should be aware of when they are seeking for a 🧠Brain MRI to look for a cause of their child’s Global Developmental Delay.

1. A brain MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a medical imaging technique that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to generate detailed images of the brain. It provides valuable information about the structure of the brain. However, there are often times, where a child’s brain structure appears normal on an MRI, and yet a child displays signs and symptoms in their physical movement and function that is abnormal. So having a Brain MRI does not guarantee a diagnosis.

2. Infants and very young children may require sedation or general anesthesia to ensure that they remain still and cooperative throughout the imaging process for a Brain MRI. Any episode of sedation will carry risks, and it is important to consider the risks versus benefits of having a Brain MRI.

3. Early Intervention Paediatric Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy are the keys to assisting children with improving their movement and function. This can be done without a Brain MRI, regardless of the MRI results. The most important outcome is a child’s progression in their skills with Early Intervention.
