🥴Has family and friends mentioned to you that your child is delayed in their speech and langauge skills 😳Are you noticing that your child doesn’t like to play with other children 🤔Wondering if your child has autism

Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, and behaviour. It is called a “spectrum disorder” because it includes a wide range of symptoms and severity levels, and individuals with autism can exhibit a diverse set of strengths and challenges. ASD can be diagnosed at various ages, but it is often identified in early childhood. In many cases, signs of autism become apparent between the ages of 2 and 3. 👧However, some children may show symptoms earlier, while others might not exhibit clear signs until later in childhood.

ASD features broadly falls into 3 key aspects:
👧1. Children with ASD have speech and language delay including the lack of eye contact, not responding to their name, lack of age appropriate verbal vocabulary and echolalia, which is the repetition or echoing of sounds, words, or phrases that a child hears.
🧒2. Children with ASD lack social reciprocity. Social reciprocity involves the mutual exchange of social signals, emotions, and behaviours, including the sharing of interests, emotions, and responses in a way that is considered appropriate to the social context. Children with ASD have difficulties or deficits in the natural back-and-forth flow of social interaction.
👧3. Children with ASD display odd behaviours such flapping their hands or gesturing and posturing their body into fixed patterns, sensitivity to light, sound or touch, playing with toys non functionally like spinning the wheels of toy cars or licking toys. They may also display superlative skills in maths, arts, music and other specialised fields.
