Children who participate in running, whether as part of track and field, 🏃🏻‍♂️cross country, soccer,⚽️ or simply as a recreational activity, are susceptible to a range of specific injuries. These injuries often result from overuse, improper training techniques, inadequate footwear, 👟or anatomical factors. Understanding and recognising these common injuries can lead to timely, appropriate treatment and minimise time away from activities. :🏃‍♂️

Osgood-Schlatter Disease:
This condition involves inflammation where the patellar tendon attaches to the shinbone. It’s common in running and jumping sports and results in pain and swelling just below the knee.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS):
The iliotibial band is a ligament that runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin. ITBS is an overuse injury causing pain on the outer part of the knee, commonly seen in long-distance runners.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome:
This is pain in the front of the knee and around the kneecap. It’s often caused by imbalances in the muscles surrounding the knee and hip, leading to increased stress on the knee joint during running.

Shin Splints:
Shin splints are characterised by pain along the inner edge of the shinbone. This condition is often seen in runners and can result from overuse, improper running technique, or inadequate footwear.
