Expecting a new baby soon and you are thinking about getting a pram
Wondering if you should get a bassinet pram or a stroller pram
Expecting a new babyand shopping for baby furniture is both exciting and confusing. A baby pram is one of those exciting yet confusing key items that every parent needs. With so many options available on the market now, it’s no wonder that new parents spend months debating between the pros and cons of a pram wth 3 wheels or 4 wheels, bassinet or no bassinet.
But before you buy a pram, find out Why our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists DO NOT recommend buying the bassinet attachment for a baby’s pram.
3 Reasons Why NOT To Buy A Bassinet Pram:
1. Bassinet Prams increase the risk of baby having a flattened head shape because baby is always lying on their backs when being transported about. Babies have to sleep on their backs to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), so spending awake times lying on their backs means that baby spends too much time lying on the back of their heads. Having baby in a standard pram will allow baby to be in a more upright posture, taking pressure off the back of their heads.
2. Bassinet Prams increase the risk of delayed speech and language development because baby will always be looking up into the sky or into the hood of the bassinet pram. This means that baby does not get any stimulation visually to be encouraged to start babbling. Having baby in a standard pram will allow baby to be tilted up into 45 degree angles to either look at mummy or the surrounding environment which allows for opportunity to see more and to start babbling sooner.
3. Bassinet Prams increase the risk of gross motor skills delay because baby miss the opportunity to learn head control when lying on their backs all the time. Baby should be learning head control by doing tummy time or being in a more upright position. Having baby in a standard pram where baby can be tilted upright at 45 degree angles will allow baby to start to learn head control while travelling in the pram.
