Did your child fall over and break their leg?
Is your child still limping after their cast was removed weeks ago?
Fractures are the most common reason children in Australia are hospitalised for injury each year – and sport is the single biggest cause. On average, more than 28,000 children each year end up in hospital somewhere in Australia with a broken bone from playing sport. In children under 5 years old, the leading causes for broken bones is playing on a playground and trampoline use.
While children tend to recover quickly from fractures, after 4-6 weeks in a cast or walking boot for their bone to heal. It is not uncommon to find children still limping weeks and months after their cast has been removed.
Common reasons why a child is still limping after a broken leg cast is removed includes:
1. Muscle weakness: After a fracture, the muscles surrounding the injured area may weaken due to immobilization or disuse. This weakness can lead to a limp as the child’s body tries to compensate for the weakened muscles.
2. Swelling and inflammation: Fractures often cause swelling and inflammation in the affected area. This swelling can restrict movement and make it difficult for the child to walk normally, resulting in a limp.
3. Restricted range of motion: Depending on the location and severity of the fracture, there may be a limited range of motion in the affected joint or limb. This restricted movement can lead to a limp as the child tries to avoid painful or uncomfortable positions.
4. Habitual Limping From The Cast: Children can become used to walking awkwardly with their casts or walking boot for 4-6 weeks and continue to walk in the same pattern even after the cast or walking boot has been removed.
