12 Nov Have you been told that you have Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a condition which describes a curvature of the spine, and is believed to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. While some cases of scoliosis deal with a stable degree of curvature in the spine, in other cases the degree of the curve increases over time.
Scoliosis most commonly emerges between the ages of 10 and 20, when the spine goes through a period of rapid
growth. It is more common in females than males.
Frequently scoliosis has no identified cause, in which case it is termed idiopathic scolios. Approximately 90% of idiopathic scoliosis cases are considered mild, requiring only ongoing observation until the skeletal maturity is reached at about 21 years old.
Treatment of scoliosis generally depends on the curve, location and cause of the scoliosis, but extreme cases require bracing, and in some cases, surgery, to correct the problem.
More commonly, adults with mild scoliosis, are not aware that they have scoliosis but they experience back pain constantly. Yet the scoliosis is the underlying cause of their constant back pain. At My Favourite Physio, our Expert Physiotherapists screens every person who presents with back pain for scoliosis, because depending on the age of the person, treatment options will vary.
