Are you experiencing pain in the back of the calf muscles when walking
Need to sit down every 50 m to allow the pain in the calves to ease off before you can start walking again
If you answered yes to the above statements, then you may have Vascular Claudication.
Vascular Claudication is tightness/cramping in your legs due to inadequate blood flow to the muscles. This tightness/cramping can sometimes be confused with nerve related pain down the legs from the lower back such as a spinal stenosis.
Here are the top signs and symptoms of Vascular Claudication:
– Tightness/cramping (usually in calf)
– Localised to lower limb (from buttocks to calf)
– Exacerbated with walking and bicycling
– Never present at rest
– Immediately improves with rest
– Not exacerbated by certain positions
Vascular Claudication may go undiagnosed because many people consider the pain to be an unwelcome but typical part of ageing. Some people simply reduce their activity level to avoid the pain. However, Vascular Claudication can be effectively treated and it will require thorough assessment by your Family Doctor and Physiotherapists. It can be concerning to learn that the reason you’re having discomfort is that your blood vessels are not having adequate blood flow. However getting the correct diagnosis and cause of the Vascular Claudication pain in your calf muscles can put you in control, and you’ll know exactly what steps to take to ease your discomfort. Physiotherapy has been shown to help improve Vascular Claudication pain.
So don’t put up with your leg pain, cramping and tightness and speak to your family doctor today.
